Georgian is spoken by approximately four million people, mainly in the Republic of Georgia where it is the official language. Approximately 98 percent of the population speaks Georgian as their first language .Knowledge of the language is essential for effective communication in the country and is used in all areas of society. There are also people who speak Georgian in parts of Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Russia.

Georgian is a member of the South Caucasian family of languages. It is the most widely spoken member of that language family. Georgian has a number of regional dialects which are usually mutually intelligible. Georgians have a great deal of pride in their language. The Georgian language is an ancient language, and the Georgian alphabet is one of 14 alphabets currently in use in the world. Georgians appreciate any effort foreigners make to speak their language.
