Requirements for involvement: Georgian applicants are required to pass the National Exams and must have high score (≥75%) in English Language. Foreign Nationals with corresponding documentation, should apply (send the documents) to the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. After approval from the Ministry, they have right to start the undergraduate course. Annual Tuition Fee: 8,000 GEL for Georgian citizens; 12,000 USD for ForeignNationals.

The highest standards of quality in modern medicine, first of all, implies a fundamental knowledge of biomedical science, research, and clinical skills - a combination of all and implementation of it in medical practice as the end product. Becoming a doctor is impossible without fundamental science education. The latter is the foundation for proper understanding of the processes occurring in healthy human, the knowledge of diagnostic tools, and corrects interpretation of pathological processes of the diseases.

Basic education in humanitarian subjects, which allows clinicians establish and manage relationships with the patients, colleagues and other representatives of the society, takes significant place in the beginning of the American MD Program curriculum.

Today, there are widely used training programs in the United States medical schools, which allow students to be actively involved in clinical studies and carry out research activities from the early stages of medical education. Harmonious blending of the basic science and clinical medicine disciplines is the bases of innovative American MD Program.

Since Fall 2012 – new Doctor of Medicine Degree Program has been developed and implemented, as a result of successful cooperation of the Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) and Emory University (U.S. Atlanta) School of Medicine (ESOM).

The program was accredited by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement of Georgia (2012).

The program provides students with the wide range of opportunities. Custom curriculum allows students pass 2 steps of the United States Licensure Examination (USMLE) before graduation. In addition, students are able to gain research and practical experience in the U.S. during certain stages of their education. The program boasts of basic medical, preclinical and clinical disciplines that are fully integrated. In addition, the beginning of the program is focused on expansion of students’ horizon of general education. For this purpose, for the first time, in the area of medical education, there are subjects taught, such as: history of civilizations, anthropology, history of art, world literature, etc. All these disciplines are integrated into the so-called "Time axis" in mind. Preclinical subjects, such as chemistry, biology and physics are taught indepth with thematic integration.

With the onset of the program starts a new discipline, "Become a doctor," which provides general development of clinical skills and critical clinical thinking skills using visits in outpatient clinics and hospitals.

In addition, the training process uses the evidence-based medical practices, high-tech laboratories, simulators, the demonstration of the cases with the active participation of the patient and the doctors’ multidisciplinary team.

The goal of the educational program
American MD (USMD) program is designed to train internationally competitive and competent, highly qualified physicians (Doctors) who are ready for postgraduate education and the specific training courses, both in Georgia and abroad (particularly in the U.S.). The medical cadres are prepared according to the requirements and standards of the country medical/public health care system.

Therefore, the program must:
  • Provide a modern, internationally recognized standards, scientific knowledge and technological advancement of medical education;
  • The future doctors should develop life-long learning skills and self-motivation;
  • Ensure that medical personnel preparation and training using new informationtechnologies;
  • Ensure that the medical education meets the requirements and standards of the national healthcare system;

Admissions and Eligibility criteria:
Admissions are done according to the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. For the citizens of Georgia the following documents are needed:
  • Complete secondary school education certificate
  • Certificate of passing the National Exams - for the citizens of Georgia;
  • A Unifying National Exams In English, received a rating of not less than 75% of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

The Citizens of Georgia, Foreign Countries and Citizens who do not have permanent residence having rights of study at accredited program of Accredited Higher Educational Institutions of Georgia without Passing Unified National Examinations:
  • Students who have been living abroad during last two or more years and study at higher educational institution recognized by the legislation of that (foreign) country and are willing to transfer from higher educational institution of foreign country to higher educational institution in Georgia.
  • Students who have been living abroad during last 2 or more years and study.

Educational program includes:
Stages, modules and cycles. Has two main stages: Premedical and medical milestones.

Premedical stage (duration 2 years), the main goal is to give students a fundamental education in the sciences, such as biology, physics, chemistry, give the awareness of the Humanities, such as Anthropology, Art History, History of civilizations, World literature, Psychology, Communication skills, etc.

Medical stage (Duration of 4 years). Fully integrated and consists of 4 phases: Phase 1 (3rd year), Foundations of Medicine, include two cycles:
  • Healthy Human
  • Human Diseases

A curriculum of "Healthy Human" is organized and is universal in a way, that it repeats the stages of development of the human natural cycle from birth to death, and consists of the activities held during this period (conception, birth, growth, sexual, and physical activity, nutrition - metabolism, aging).

A curriculum of "Healthy Human" includes the following modules:

Basics of medicine, Human Development, embryology, cell, tissue, neuroscience, movement and physical activity, nutrition and metabolism, endocrine control; aging and death, genetics, and evolution.

With all the above being held concurrently with the student's daily activities in clinical practice, which is mainly carried out in simulation center and outpatient/inpatient facilities.

Another interesting fact is that each module is a separate complex issue and being discussed and read jointly among various medical specialists, for example: theme: "Obesity and related problems" are highlighted together by endocrinologist, biochemist, psychiatrist and a surgeon.

A curriculum of "Healthy Human" continues with module: Basics of pathology, which in fact represents a transitional feature of the cycle - "Human Diseases". Curriculum - "Human Diseases" using anatomical systems-based integration and includes the following modules: skin, muscles, bones, joints, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and urogenital system, endocrine, and a female reproductive system; Hematology and Neuroscience (2 modules).
Each theme includes a separate module within the integrated teaching of basic and clinical science.

Phase 2 - Applications of Medical Sciences Phase This phase provides students with basic knowledge of clinical medicine. During this period, the student will be engaged in clinical work, that means, so-called assistant to medical personnel (Core Clerkship) in Internal Medicine (8 weeks), Surgery (8 weeks), Pediatrics (8 weeks), Obstetrics - Gynecology (6 weeks), Outpatient services (5 weeks), Psychiatry (6 weeks), subspecialty clerkships (Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, Radiology (4 weeks), Elective module) (4 weeks).

Phase 3 is the Discovery Phase, which includes structured time for students who have interests in the area of basic scientific studies or clinical medicine, health care management and organization, medical ethics, and other.

Phase 4 - Translation of Medical Science Phase. This phase provides the opportunity for students to establish as a doctor.

Through the rotation, such as: sub - Intern, gaining a successful clinical experience working in intensive therapy and emergency departments, is the necessary part (Capstone Course) before the end of the course program.

Each student is associated with a society and the small group of people. Each group has a small group advisor, who assists students with the academic environment, the University and, in general, with the process of adaptation, throughout the four years of medical education.

The specific reference to curriculum organization
The whole process, as mentioned above, is divided into two main stages: initial PREMEDICAL and MEDICAL stages (see below).

American MD (USMD) Program. Medical part of the program

The last year students rotate through Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Surgery and so on. During the rotation, the student can choose a plan for the next residency and specifically enhance the education.

After completion of the course students will be awarded the MD degree. They have possibility to pass the two steps of U.S. licensure examinations (USMLE ) and, therefore, will be able to prepare for postgraduate education and specialized professional training both in Georgia and abroad (including the U.S. ) .
